How To Use A Kayak Paddle
Effectively using a kayak paddle is key to maneuvering and propelling your kayak smoothly through the water, making your kayaking experience at Nicolet Beach much more fun!
Holding
To begin, hold the paddle with both hands, keeping your grip comfortable but firm.
Place your hands about shoulder-width apart on the paddle’s shaft.
Ensure the blades are properly oriented; the larger, concave side of each blade should face towards the back of the kayak. This orientation helps catch the water and propel you forward.
Paddling
To start paddling, dip one blade into the water and use it to push against the water while the other blade is out of the water, preparing for the next stroke.
As you start your stroke, lean slightly forward and insert the blade into the water near your knees.
Pull the blade through the water towards your hip, using your torso to generate power rather than relying solely on your arms. This technique helps maintain a smooth, consistent motion and reduces fatigue.
Keep your strokes steady and avoid lifting the blade too high out of the water to avoid excessive splashing and maintain efficiency.
Once you’ve completed the stroke on one side, switch to the other side to balance the kayak and maintain a straight path.
Steering
While paddling, use a combination of forward strokes and a dragging paddle to navigate and steer.
Forward strokes propel you straight ahead while dragging your paddle will turn the boat to that side.
To turn the kayak more quickly, you can use a "sweep stroke," where you extend the paddle blade further from the kayak and make a wide, sweeping arc.
When at rest, you can paddle backward on one side, and that will turn you in that direction.
Practice these techniques in calm water to build confidence and improve your paddling efficiency, making your kayaking experience more enjoyable and effective.
